I think your missing the decoder. This is not for the drive. The decoder
translates the signal from the DVD.
Download and install one of the free sofwares.

If your Aspire is factory loaded. you should have a program called "Acer
Arcade" that has all the goodies in it. Check in Programs.

If you have been able to play DVDs on this computer before, and you receive
an error message, you might be able to solve the problem by restarting your
computer.

If you receive an error message the first time you try to play a DVD, you
might not have a decoder installed, or your decoder might need to be
updated.

In addition to your DVD-ROM drive and player software, you must have either
a hardware or software decoder in order to play DVDs. A hardware decoder
also requires a decoder driver. Decoders and their drivers are available
from third-party manufacturers.

If you have an older decoder installed, contact the manufacturer of the
decoder to obtain an updated version that is compatible with Windows XP.

Updated, Windows XP compatible DVD decoders are available through the
following DVD solution providers: Solution Providers Decoder Products
National Semiconductor Corporation Mediamatics DVD player
MGI Software Corp. Zoran SoftDVD and MGI SoftDVD Max
Ravisent Technologies Software CineMaster or CinePlayer 1.0
InterVideo, Inc. WinDVD
CyberLink Corp. PowerDVD

I hate doing this, but it might help with what doS is talking about.

Bob

These are all DVD interface media players, like VLC, only they cost
money.

They will not work if the Pioneer cannot even see the DVD.

You said that "my Computer" sees the E:\ drive. Does it see a DVD when you
insert it?

Hmm,

I click on 'Cinema' and it says:

'Unable to detect a DVD or DVD device on your computer. Continue anyway?'

So I press 'continue' and get a menu.

I press 'eject' and out comes the DVD...

And now I've told it to apply the default settings.

Insert my (region 1 - I checked!) DVD and it still doen't 'see' the
device.

My Arcade has only types of media. No 'programs' at all. Not in Help
either.

Any body got a different DVD you could borrow?

Found it!

Apparently I have ASPI drivers and (on exploring) find that they aren't
installed.

Look he

http://web.ncf.ca/aspi.htm

I have d/l'd the right ASPI files and now have to figure out how to
install them.

Will let you know the result.

(I have been doing this for nearly 20 hours now, a rapid learning curve
on MS and PC's!)
