How can I reformat a (very) damaged hard disk ? by
Castor Nageur[_3_]
Hi all,
On of my 2 TB HDD (formatted in NTFS) felt on the floor (the disk was
off when it felt).
At first, it looked as if the disk was still working fine but after
one month of use, the disk began to fail and I completely lost access
to my data a few days ago.
Thanks to ddrescue (a wonderful...

Best strategy hard drive swapping? by
HaHaHoHoHeeHee
I have several older systems, some with old USB 1.0 and others
without USB.
I am trying to figure out the best way to handle occasional
swapping of drives from one machine to another.
Originally I was thinking of using removable hard drive caddies.
All drives I will be using are IDE, (ATA I...

Partition Utility by
Bob
Partition Magic 8 is worthless for my system. I have two HD installed
and both have the Active bit set. The BIOS is smart enough to know
that and allows me to choose which one I want to boot from.
Windows is not as smart - it issues a STOP0x9F POWER_FAILURE error
when I shut down, presumably...

Western Digital 320Gb hard drives? by
A. J. Moss
Western Digital WD3200JB (8M cache, but not the fancy RAID edition.)
Has anyone tried these? Can anyone comment on their reliability?
They cost about the same as a 300Gb drive (from any manufacturer),
and, all other things being equal, the extra 20Gb is worth having.

Building a new system: SCSI or IDE? by
Jonathan Sachs
I'm assembling a new system in a couple of months, and am facing the
old dilemma: SCSI or IDE disks?
I have traditionally insisted on SCSI disks because they're faster and
more reliable. Lately I've been having some hearing problems, though,
and the drive noise is bothering me. Thus I'm motivated...

Andy
To All Cognoscenti, Greetings!
I leave my computer on 24/7 to minimize damage due to heat fluctuations. Am
I wise or foolish to do so?
Thanks.

An open letter to Eric Gisin by
Winey
Eric,
Several days ago, you called me a "troll" because YOU declared that I
had "lost" an argument.
First of all, there was no argument. Usenet has, (or at least until
you arrived on the scene) always been about information exchange and
discussion. Readers can draw their own...

Which of the two following architectures would you choose for a

The new DiamondMax 10 line should feature 16MB buffer on Parallel ATA models too, if I'm not wrong.

Ghost or something like it? by

OK, my Dell system crashed last week. With help from a Dell tech support
guy, I did a quick format and reinstalled everything. Not doing the format,
that is, just trying to get the Restore disk to do a "fix files" routine
didn't work.
Luckily I had backed up most important stuff, but it still...

SATA 3G by

I have an HP Pavilion 1090n computer with ASUS PTGD1-LA motherboard. This

which support 3G. Question: does 3G SATA support have to be provided on...
