PC 4GB RAM limit by
Tim Anderson
The cheaper motherboards (ie. most of them) for P4 or Athlon 64 support a
maximum of 4GB RAM, even if the motherboards and processors support the
AMD64 extensions that can address sqillions of GB. On the other hand, more
upmarket boards support more RAM - up to 24GB or maybe more - for Xeon...

Power supply EXPLOSION by
Peter Hucker
Ok, maybe watercooling the power supply was not a good idea.
It certainly kept the power transistors with the big heatsinks cool, but what of the poor little diodes and a transformer, which didn't get the airflow they expected?
Been working fine for a few weeks, then suddenly..... about 15 bangs,...

PCs to change radically in 2004! (The Enquirer) by
Wayne Youngman
Hi,
I'm sure most of you know about these changes, but it seems 2004 is *INTELS*
year to go WHOOOOSH! Makes me question spending £200.00 on a new case and
PSU (sniff bye bye coolermaster/lian-li ATX case and ANTEC TrueBlue 480w)

Another Intel vs AMD Comparison by
Raymond
Semperon @ 1.8GHz vs Celeron D @ 3.3GHz
Running a floating point program using the
..NET 1.1 complier, running trig, power, mul, add
functions, nothing too fancy.
The Semperon beats the Celeron D by 20%.
Wow, nearly half the clock and still outperforms.
Something seriously wrong with the P4...

Motherboard for P4. by
MS
Hi,
Having had such great replies about which processor to buy, now is my
chance to ask about which motherboard.
I've decided to get a Pentium 4 3.0E Ghz 800Mhz Prescott CPU, but my
supplier (who will be doing the actual system build) has loads of P4
motherboards. I've narrowed it down to these...

Pumping Liquid Nitrogen by
Guy Macon
I have been offered a small (about the size of a water
cooler) liquid nitrogen generator at an attractive
price. It generates four and a half liters per day,
using a gravity feed to keep a half liter dewar filled.
I want to pump the liquid nitrogen into a hole drilled
into the heatsinks of the...

Thermal pad or Thermal paste? by
Vin
hey there,
after some excessive amount of case modding to fit 4 additional
suckholes/blowholes (3 in the side case blowing IN and 1 on top of case
blowing OUT), i've finally managed to bring my case temperatures under
control -- about 6C above the room ambient (ambient is 28C, case is 34C).
But my...

Need a Kick-Ass Case! by
Wayne Youngman
Hi,
I have just sold my 4 months old AMD system which was housed in an ANTEC
SX630II Mini Tower case. I did like the ANTEC but it was my *Value* option.
I intend to build a new system (AMD I reckon) but this time I want to
push-the-boat-out with the Case + PSU.
I am an overclocker, I like ABIT...

Changing 'default' FSB speed with Tualatin? by
~misfit~
I'm running a Tualatin Celeron 1.3Ghz in a Gigabyte GA-6VEM-L integrated
mobo. It doesn't have BOIS setting to change between 66/100/133, or
switches/jumpers from what I can see. It seems to get the default FSB speed
from the CPU and it then allows you a certain overclock (in BIOS) from
there, in...

Overclocking Qs by
Peter Cavan
Hi
I know people say that Dells are unoverclockable but what I wanted to know
is - are they actually impossible to OC or is it just very hard to do? I
mean with keeping all the hardware the same, not changing the motherboard,
CPU etc.
Thanks for any help

What's the point of overclocking? by
mike3
Hi.
Why do people feel the need to overclock their hardware, anyway? I
don't overclock, I settle for the speed the hardware I got is meant to
run at. After all, overclocking means you have to spend _more_ money in
the long run for a given speed, not less, since it shortens the
lifespan and you...

What Core 2 To Buy Now? by
Bob Johnson[_2_]
The C2 2160 looks like a dream according to Toms' and other reviews. Are
all samples going to OC to 3.0 w/ a good MB and stock cooling? Or is it
luck of the draw and getting a good "stepping"? My guru says the lack of
L2 cache is a real big deal and that a slower speed but higher cache...

Asus P2B v1.10 reboots @beginning of test #6 in memtest by

For all the ASUS P2B and 440BX slot1 experts out there, TSIA for the most
part.
The board is flashed to 1014.003, The system used with a bare minimum of
processor, memory and video card.
Initially, using a P2-350, 4MB ATI Rage AGP, and 64MB PC100, the system
passes memtest completely.

Switching from AMD to INTEL! by
Wayne Youngman
Greetings,
After 4 months of living in Barton/nForce2 land, I have decided it's about
time I *knock-up* a current INTEL rig (with a view to overclock!).
I really do rate my AMD systems, but I believe that INTEL has a superior
*Memory & SATA RAID* implementation, and I wants it! (my Precious).
I...

fsb speed - why does it matter? by
James Hanley
it seems to me that nobody needs a high fsb. since they could just
push the multiplier really high.
I can see the greatness of ddr since the same speed processor can
read/write twice as much per cycle. (i assume that the cpu has to be
ddr to receive or write double)

Problem with new P4 3.06 & win98se installation by
127.0.0.1
X-No-Archive: yes
Just upgraded my processor from a P4 1.7 - P4 3.06ghz.
The problem is Windows 98 SE always locks up at the same point at the start.
I established that the system is stable by putting windows XP on an external
hard drive and running PRIME95 & MEMTEST. Both ran fine for hours...
