Default compaq notebook battery button

I bought a cheap compaq notebook second hand.

What is the purpose of what looks like a meter with 25 50 75 100 and the
button underneath it on the bottom of the battery with an LED?

When you push and hold the button. The meter lights up to tell you how much
charge is left in the battery.
