Subject: Lead in and Lead out

Mike Richter (Slimy ****) crapped:

I've posted privately to Andy on the FAQ section.

It is quite dated ... and has significant errors
based on my understanding.

An essential omission for this Subject is the role
of the leadout/runout in a reader.

A CD-ROM (or audio) drive needs the runout

to read the session at all.

Not in my experience.

An audio disc without a leadout ... will read in ANY player
up to the point where the data ends provided it was burned DAO.

Failed data discs burned DAO will behave similarly,
any complete files will be readable in any reader.

Mike Richter has been for YEARS blaming the UDF -- to weasel out the
bugs of DirectCD:

Packet writing is the same as UDF

UDF is a fragile format
UDF is an unreliable format
There is an inherent problem in UDF

Mike Richter's Unadulterated White Lies (error rates)(7-00)
-----------------------------------------------------
======================
From: Mike Richter
Date: 7/22/00

I have been told by a friend ... that burning above 2X
will not result in reliable data.

Is he in the mail room? I certainly hope he has nothing to do
with the engineering side if he's so greatly misinformed.

I have actually measured error rates

The best results were when writing at 4x,
2x was slightly poorer and 1x was worst of all.
======================

Then again:

======================
From: Mike Richter
Date: 4/17/00
Subject: whats the point of 8x cd recording
if you can hardly ever write?

I have never understood the advantage of 8x writing to begin with
- unless you're in the mass-pirating business. I make enough
mistakes at 2x and 4x.

I find that the BLER is lower at 2x even on the 8x blanks I prefer.
======================

The above is an unadulterated white LIE.

First, it directly contradicts the (7/22/00) post. Second, there was NO
way Mikey could have found the BLER -- Mikey had NO time to use a BLER
tester:

======================
From: Mike Richter
Date: 4/23/00

I have borrowed a machine which will do BLER testing
- if only I can find the time to use it.

======================
From: Mike Richter
Date: 12/29/00

I have a BLER tester on loan; all I need is the time
to set it up and learn to use it.

Maybe by 2003 if I'm lucky.

About to trade my 4x TEAC for a Mitsumi that does CDRW's at 12x.

Not well if at all.

Mikey's 12x Plextor must be something special:

I even write files with INCD on the high speed Liteon
with low speed CDRWs (up to 4 speed).

Well I just used a couple of old Memorex 4X CD-RWs
in a new Plex 40/12/40 and had no problems.

And here comes Mikey with the "error rates" crap:

======================
From: Mike Richter
Date: 10/20/02

I have tested non-HighSpeed erasables in my 12x HighSpeed
and 8x non-HighSpeed Plextors and find substantially higher
error rates at 4x in the HighSpeed drives.
======================

The above is an unadultered white LIE.

There was NO way Mikey could have tested "error rates". First, there
was NO error rate measuring software supporting Plextors. Second, even
if there was a software, it could not have found error rates -- because
the above Plextors do NOT report C1 errors.

======================
From: Mike Richter

There are many problems with eraable media. The most common is
using a medium poorly matched to your drive. For starters,
check the logo on the drive and on the package of blanks.

If they don't match - HighSpeed, UltraSpeed or neither - then
you're asking for trouble.

======================
From: Mike Richter
Date: 12/24/03

Most likely, you are using the wrong media.

If it's UltraSpeed, it wants discs in similarly marked packages
- rated 16x and above. If it's High Speed, it wants discs in
similarly marked packages, rated 4x and above. If it has neither
marking, it needs discs without such marking on their packaging
and rated no higher than 4x.

DirectCD 3.05

Some older, low-speed recorders cannot correctly write high-speed

DirectCD now checks the media

Subject: High and low speed CDRW - compatibility

Since i have Plex 8432 and i'm intend to buy Liteon 40 x or 48 x
i wonder: I have some 4x speed CDRW's - will i be able to use
(rewrite) them in new drive too or not (with 4x speed, of course)?

I've heard that 4x and 10x CDRW's are quite different.

They use substantially different alloys. You may be able to write
to the non-HS (4x) media at 4x, but the recording will be poor and
reliability will be low.
=======================

Do you suppose the burner makers are too stupid not to have considered
the 'substantial different alloy'?

Do you suppose the 4x writing stragegy for low-speed cd-rw is the same
as that for the high-speed cd-rw?

This is Mikey's response to the question why Roxio's DirectCD causes

unstable under WIN 2000?

======================
From: Mike Richter

Subject: What is Responsible for Packet Writing Instability?

There is an inherent problem in UDF, particularly with
fixed-length packets

It is that the directory information for the disc is held and
modified in RAM between loading the disc and ejecting it.

Anything which precludes a complete, valid package being written
back risks the whole disc.
======================

In the case of the UDF as implemented by DirectCD, the directory is not
held in ram until the disc is ejected -- supposedly the inherent problem
of UDF:

I've watched the disc write lights on my Plextor drives when
ejecting a DirectCD CD-RW disc, and the drive never does any
writing at that time.

Once, in an attempt to prove this, I wrote a bunch of files to
a DirectCD CD-RW disc. As soon as the write pulses ceased,

I pressed the computer's RESET button.

After the computer restarted, the CD-RW disc was fine, and all
the files I had just written were fully accessible.
