Default 6800 vs 7900GS

I'm about to buy a machine and my two choices are the 6800 and the 7900GS,
both 256MB.

The machine with the 6800 is more powerful and has more memory, but in
theory a 7 is better than a 6, so the 7900GS is a better card.

That said, nVidia's numbering confuses the heck out of me. Any thoughts?
Both are PCI-E in almost identical machines.

Thanks,

Tom

How much more powerful and how much more memory? You later say both are
almost identical machines?

but in theory a 7 is better than a 6,

Not necessarily. A 7300 for example is a lot slower than a 6800.

so the 7900GS is a better card.

This is true. The 7900GS is almost twice as fast:

Wow, that's a big difference. I didn't make myself clear about the
machines. They have identical specs except memory and video card. More
memory wouldn't make up for the difference in speed of the 7900GS. I'll go
with it and add memory.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Now I get a new toy!

Tom
