Mike Richter, were you born with "Scam Artist" emblazoned on your face? -------------------------------------- http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...mindspring.com (Messages 10, 12 -- 34, 54 -- 69) A certain scam artist swears by the following: "DirectCD bugs translate into the faults of packet writing" "DirectCD bugs translate into unreliability of cd-rw media" A lot of the DirectCD problems that are slimily blamed on the cd-rw media and the packet writing format are caused by these DirectCD bugs: ----------------------- DirectCD 3.05 Fixes Some older, low-speed recorders cannot correctly write high-speed rated CD-RW media, but DirectCD would formerly allow you to try. DirectCD now checks the media and will reject as appropriate. === FIXED ??? DirectCD 5.3.4 Fixed: Burn to Ultra High Speed media on non-Ultra High Speed Drives, no longer allowed === FIX a FIX ??? ----------------------- Mikey's slimy "excuse" for the above DirectCD bugs: ===================== From: Mike Richter (King Troll) Subject: roxio direct CD Date: 6/30/02 I find that in using DIRECT CD, after I format the disk, (which takes forever) it shows it's completely full and instructions are to delete something to make room for what I'm tying to drag & drop. At a guess - answering is much easier if you provide some information - you are formatting an erasable for fixed-length packets. In that case, you have a medium which is poorly matched to your drive. When DCD formats, it reads back each sector to be sure it's well prepared. With a mismatch, many sectors fail which means formatting takes a looooooooonng time and the result is too little usable space to be of value. Try a disc better matched to your drive and be sure it matches the drive for HS or non-HS. ===================== But then: ====================== From: Mike Richter (Lying Scum) Subject: DirectCD 5 .. More funnies Date: 7/29/01 Incidentally, with a little experience, you're likely to find that formatting an erasable is not a problem. Fixed-length packets make for the least reliable format for CD recording and few people find a need for many such discs. ====================== ---------------------- Mikey, you are a Scum! ---------------------- |

When formatting a cd using direct cd, the formatting and verifying status seems never ends. I wait for 2 hrs, the percentage status bar indicated it is 100% but the formatting didn't stop. I need to kill the program manually. Presumably, you're working with an erasable (CD-RW) blank. If so, it's poorly matched to your drive. When formatting, each sector is checked and if faulty retired from service. That process is very slow and results in little or no formatted capacity; any that is available is particularly unreliable. Try some blanks which are better matched to your drive - have lower error rates. However, be aware that fixed-length packets are the least reliable and most fragile format available for writing CDs. ====================== But then: ====================== From: Mike Richter (Lying Scum) Subject: DirectCD 5 .. All of a sudden I found myself unable to format a CD-RW. For the most part the drive will just keep flashing and I have to shut and restart the computer to stop it and retrieve the disc. Difficulty in formatting an erasable is most often due to the medium, not to the software or drive hardware. During a full format, each sector is written and read back; if the error rate is excessive, the sector is retried, then retired. Given errors, the process is very slow and even if it succeeds, the disc is no longer reliable. (Not that fixed-length packets are very reliable to begin with.) Note that errors increase with erase cycles; the practical limit is far less than the theoretical 1000 cycles. You can check this by mastering an erasable then counting errors. You should have better luck with a new erasable from a batch which has worked before. If that doesn't work, then try checking for dirt in the drive - if necessary, blowing it out gently with "canned air". ====================== But then: ====================== From: Mike Richter (Lying Scum) Subject: DirectCD 5 .. Date: 6/5/03 Simply put, no, not all drives will write, erase, or overwrite all erasable media. There are three categories of erasables: UltraSpeed, HighSpeed, and undesignated. If your drive is UltraSpeed or HighSpeed, it will be so designated on the logo on the faceplate. If not marked, it means it is for undesignated discs. [Liteon drives don't have such logos.] If you do not use a blank with marking to match the designation on your drive, you may be able to write more or less well and even to erase - sometimes and without much confidence. [Higher speed drives write to lower speed discs, ] [except the initial 2x discs. ] You may also find that a specific blank of the appropriate type is not well written in your drive, [ No friggin' ****, Mikey! ] but the first step is to use matching designations. ====================== ---------------------- Mikey, you are a Scum! ---------------------- |
