Default New Dell computer

Hi.

I'd like to build a new Dell, however I'm not sure which one suits best.

Minimum requirements:

1x PCI / 1x PCIe 1x PCI-X (for external RAID SATA II card)
Space for 6 Harddisks SATA II
Dual-Core Intel = 3.0 GHz
2 GB memory
floppy
PowerPlant +500W
MultiCardReader (SD CF-II)
2x Firewire
3x USB 2.0

It's basically for video applications (cutting, rendering, muxing,
authoring, bruning, ...)

Thanks.

Well, you're beyond me. You clearly are looking for a server. None of the
Optiplex or Dimensions will meet your requirement, particularly for a PCI-X
slot (which I consider a dead-end anyway).

From your specs, you might want to just build your own.

Really overkill, but...

get a refurb server from the outlet, and then get a nice 256mb PCI video
card. that will give you everything you want. add your own OS. that is
the only thing you'll be able to do with dell.

George,
If you can wait about a month, the 'Core 2' machines should be
available.

If you have to order at dell.de or dell.be, your're stuck regarding the
"self built Dell", since only dell.com offers this possibility with the
XPS 700.

But ... let's make out of the PCI-X bus a PCIe bus, which Dell would
suit best then?

Thanks,

Buy an Antec server case (which will hold 6+ drives in (2) 3-drive
quick-release cages). Should be able to find one retail with an Antec 500
watt PS already in the case.

http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=91550

Pick up a suitable Asus or ABIT system board that matches your specs.
