Default 7596 refuses to boot...

I have an old Compaq (7596) that until yesterday evening worked fine
BUT I have noticed that the floppy dirve was making some strange
sounds the last few days....

Anyhow now the word compaq flashes on the screen and I get a blinking
white mark on the top left of the screen and thats as far as it
goes...and the light on the floppy stays lite up no matter if I have a
disk in the drive or not...

Tried to boot from my "Windows ME" CD ...nothing.. (the computer is
running ME BTW...
Tried to get into bios by hitting F8 or F10.. nothing..
..
I suspect that the floppy is shot... and the machine wil not get any
further then the "A" drive looking for the system files... (btw)
putting in a boot disc in the "A" drive does not work either...

Question .(s)
1. correct way to get into bios... to alter the boot order?
2. If I need to replace the floppy...can I just go out and
purchase a standard 3 1/4 in floppy ... since my experience
with compaq's is limited I do not know
3. Assuming I have to take it apart I might as well increase
the ram up to 512...(it has 256 now)...what type of memory
does this machine use...

Thanks...
Sorry for the dumb questions but I am not really a Computer
Tech ...for sure...

1. F10 at the Compaq logo screen.
2. You are lucky. The 7596 uses an industry standard 3.5" floppy drive.
3. The 7596 uses PC100 syncDRAM. Each of the two slots can take up to a
256MB Low/Single density DIMM. Try:

Had the same thing happen. Paid Compaq $45 for them to tell me to format and
reinstall windows.
