Default presario 5220

I have just accquired a Presario 5220 running XP. The computer runs well, but
it has a few small problems.
It has the original motherboard with onboard sound etc.
The only add on is a network card that seems to work ok
It also has just a plain monitor
The problems a
1 It won't shut down properly. It gets to the "Windows shutting down
screen" .It turns the hard drive off but the screen is locked up on the
"Windows shutting down screen". You have to hold the power button in for a
few seconds to turn the computer off.

2 The sound does not work, what I have found is the volume control won't
stay up it slowly creeps back to nothing. I have had a fairly good look at
the hp site and can't find any solutions for either problem.

I can put up with them but It would be good to sort them out

Have you tried altering/disabling the power save options in the BIOS?
