S6020WM versus S4020WM (at Walmart)
I bought a Compaq Presario S4020WM at Walmart last summer for $495, complete
with a 17" monitor. It has an AMD XP 2400+ processor at 2.0GHz. I had to put in more RAM to make it work right, but it's a good machine. They're currently selling the Compaq Presario S6020WM at Walmart for $495 with a monitor, but these have a Celeron 2.6GHz processor. I must advise against purchase of this one. I have tested that processor, and it is only half as fast as my AMD processor running at 2.0 GHz. Don't be deceived by "GHz", which no longer tells the relative speed of processors. That's a game Intel is playing with their current batch of Celerons. They realize there's a sucker born every minute. -- Euclid |

Anyone with any pc knowledge knows that an AMD processor is much faster than
a celeron.Still the walmart celeron pc w/monitor is a great value. "Euclid" wrote in message hlink.net... Apples v. Oranges on the processors. And for what lots of folks use their
PCs for (surfing the net), the Celeron would not be half as fast as the AMD chip. I have a home-built AMD Athlon XP 2200+ box and it certainly isn't twice as fast as my 2.4GHz Celeron machine in "real world" use. If you are a heavy gamer, now that's a different story. The Athlon would certainly be far superior. Plus the Athlon boxes usually have an AGP slot where a fast video card can be installed. The Celerons are limited to onboard Intel video. Most do not, however. Which 5003s? The 5003CA and the 5003R both come with
Durons (and AGP slots) and the 5003US with a PIII 933 and no AGP slot. HH "doS" wrote in message ... I have two Celeron machines( Compaq 5003) that have agp slots. "HH" wrote in message . net... Part of that is a matter of $$$. Lower cost chips in economy class
machines (i.e. onboard everything) good AGP slot video chips aren't cheap. Celerons originally where not recommended for such machines as most borrowed CPU cycles for other onboard devices. Several peripheral manufactures even warned against installing their cards to such machines since they knew that the early celerons weren't up to the task of having their products load added to the existing demands placed on the CPU. Celerons have gotten better as well as the peripherals so the load is less and the CPU has gained enough power to handle the basic demands placed upon it. With any PC the more the add-ons and peripherals handle them selves the less load placed on the CPU. This leaves it free to handle software and user interface processes at a better speed. If you should ever get the chance, try running a P90 with 8 Mb of RAM and a set of cheap cards all stealing CPU cycles for their processing. Then upgrade it to all top end PCI cards for the peripherals and finally stepping the RAM up one level at a time to a max of 256 Mb. As you swap out the cards you will slowly notice the improved performance when the CPU doesn't have to support audio/video/modem... KC "HH" wrote in message . net... Most do not, however. Ah... I see....The first Presario Celerys with an AGP slot I've run across.
I see why, too. The 815E chipset. Should be able to stick in a 133MHz PIII. HH "doS" wrote in message ... HH, my mistake, I have the 5300US. Celeron 1.1 "HH" wrote in message . net...
