Processor type in Sony VAIO? Possibillities of upgrading?

wrote: I’ve got a Sony VAIO Laptop (Desktop Replacement) model PCG-K25. I want to know if the processor is SSE3, and what kind of specs it has, core, number, etc. I couldn’t get very far with the processor finder because they had 2.8, A, B, C, etc... ________ The only information on Sony’s site was: Processor Intel®Pentium®4 Processor 2.80 GHz1 (512kb L2 Cache) Front Side Bus Speed 533MHz That is the plain old 2.8GHz P4, no extra letters after it. I'm afraid that no, it does not support SSE3, only SSE2. Mind you, SSE3 adds VERY little over what was offered in SSE2. What are the possibilities of swapping out the processor, and what would the pros and cons be. I’ve built two desktops before, so I’m sure I could do it. I have heard of other people doing it. Would it work with my chipset? I understand that it would void my warranty... Swapping out laptop processors tends to be a VERY tricky process at best. As best as I can tell, 533MT/s is the fastest bus speed that this notebook supports. The fastest drop-in replacement processor for that system is probably the 3.06GHz chip, and that's just not a worthwhile upgrade at all. There's a (very) slim possibility that it would support the slightly newer P4 chips built on a 90nm process which are offered at up to 3.33GHz (possibly even 3.46GHz), but even that isn't much of an upgrade and as mentioned above, the chances of it working are very slim. Also, I’m having a problem hibernating. It works the first time, but the second time I get a Windows - System Error saying "Insufficient resources to complete API." Then I hit the power button again, and it goes into standby. However, after about 5 standbys, I turn it back on and find out that XP had restarted completely. I try to save my work before standing by, but sometimes I don’t remember to, and then the information is lost. Do a Google search on the exact error: "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API" It brings up MANY hits for a variety of different laptops, along with some possible solutions. In particular you might want to check out this article if you have not already installed SP2: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330909 ------------- Tony Hill hilla underscore 20 at yahoo dot ca |
