Default Bootable USB memory stick? Speeds?

Can anyone list any USB memory sticks which they have successfully been able
to format as bootable and boot from?

I've got a couple of USB memory stick/MP3 players that have to be formatted
with a utility app so I cannot create the boot sector as needed.

I was thinking specifically of this stick, but info for any is appreciated.

Also, I was wondering on how fast USB sticks are. What kind of speeds would
I see if I booted from the above USB 1.1 stick, or the USB 2 stick below?

I was under the impression that *any* USB memory stick could
be bootable, but it's only speculation since i've not tried
all, or even a fair percentage. I've booted from Lexar,
Kingston, a couple of different generics, & Micro Advantage.

Mainly success seems tied to the motherboard, two different
boards which both seem to support it, won't both work when
configured same, even with same Award/Phoenix bios
(framework).

Beware of Tiger Direct, their rebates and specs on products.
It could easily be that a drive advertised as "USB2" doesn't
actually transfer faster, they're simply claiming "USB2"
as-in, it'll work if attached to a USB2 port. Be
particularly weary of unknown generics, insist on disclosure
of guaranteed, specific data rates.

Generally speaking, the small drives you linked are more
likely the slowest, as chip capacity went up and higher
speeds were supported, the minimum size of the drives
increased as well. Searching with Google or at "Deal"
'sites might find a 256MB drive for about $15 AR.
