Default Ram Upgrade

I am trying to upgrade a HP pavillion a400y. Spec says it can take
PC2700 up to 2GB with max of 1GB per slot. Right now i have 256MB
installed PC2700 DDR. When i look in the bios it says

installed memory 256MB/PC2100,
mem bank 1 n/a
mem bank 2 250MB/DDR

When i add the 1GB DDR PC2700 the memory actually goes down.

installed memory 32MB/PC2100
mem bank 1 N/A
mem bank 2 32MB/ddr.

The computer must see something, but it not recognizing it right. I
upgraded the bios to the latest on the HP site.
