Default Need to convert .avi "audio" files

How do I convert an avi audio file to an mp3? Somebody sent me this
recording and wants me to burn it to a CD, but none of my software will
recognize it as an audio file. I can play it in Windows Media Player, but
that's about it. There is no video in this file.

This is a PR announcement recorded at a local TV station and they use Macs
over there.

Help!

Sheldon

GoldWave, I use version 4.26 although version 5 is now available.

That will do what you need.

Most audio editors will open such a file. Use whichever you prefer:
GoldWave, CoolEdit, ...

Okay, I figured out how to do it. I think the problem is the fact that the
file contains no video, so the programs we are trying to use don't work.

I played the file in Media Player and rerecorded as a wav file using
WaveRepair, which also lets me edit out the dead air and boost the signal.
Then I have to record it to a CD, as my "ripping" programs will only
recognize the CD. At this point I can easily convert the file to an mp3.
Whew!

Thanks for all the help.

Every time I try to open this avi file in VirtualDub the program comes

back
and says no video stream found. I can listen to with Media Player, but
there is no picture.

Any "freeware" programs? I'm not sure how many times we need to do
this. (And I do realize I can download a trial version of the

programs
you mentioned.)

VirtualDub (freeware) will export the audio from the avi as .wav. You

can
then convert to mp3 using any encoder you like (RazorLame, MusicMatch
Jukebox, etc.)

You are correct. I can convert to 96 or 160, but there appears to be no 128
in my version. It is only voice, no music, so 96 should be fine.

Thanks.

This part is a bit silly. Many programs will convert wav to mp3.
RazorLame/EasyLame is a very convenient one. For low bitrates (128kbps

and
lower) MusicMatch Jukebox is very good (File, Convert).
