Default DSL Modem Questions

(I had trouble finding the appropriate newsgroup, if this is not it,
please direct me to the proper one).

I just got a used speedstream 5100 for use with AT&T DSL service here in
the SF Bay ara. I'm not sure it is working right. My understanding is
that it is suppose to be able to do DHCP. However, I can only seem to
be able to get it to connect with PPPoE and I can't seem to access the
modem setting with my browser through http://speadstream (as the manual
I downloaded indicates).
