Default Issues with new build

I just upgraded my system to an E8400 running on a Gigabyte EP35-DSR3 board
with 2 x 2Gig sticks of OCZ Platinum PC6400 RAM running in slot 1 and 3 in
dual channel mode and a good CoolerMaster hs/f. It booted up, installed XP
SP3 and all the drivers without issue. 100% stable at default settings. The
CPU is running at 38-39 idle and 45 under full Orthos load. Case has more
ventilation than a balcony and room temp is 70F. The instant I try to
overclock it, the BIOS freezes when displaying the dual channel memory
memory message and reboots with it's default failsafe parameters. I checked
the CPU hs/f even though there was apparently no heat issues. I tried upping
vcore and vram. I tried everything I could think of in the BIOS. This thing
will not even run 3.1Ghz. I know this unit is capable of at least 3.4 with
the stock cooler let alone what I have. Any ideas?

Looked through the reviews ?

Is the BIOS the right version ? Maybe the BIOS that came with it, isn't
the best for your processor.

Any chance your RAM is running on the Auto setting? If so, the board
will set it to run asynchronously at its rated 400 MHz. I don't know if you
are familiar with the Gigabyte boards, but pressing CTRL + F1 after
you enter the BIOS setup gets you some advanced settings (I forget
*exactly* where). You want your "System Memory Multiplier" setting to
be 2.0 for synchronous operation. You can check with CPU-Z on the
memory tab to see if FSBRAM is at 1:1.

Hmmm...mine has the 12/13/2007-P35-ICH9-6A89OG0NC-00 BIOS....identified as the F1 version. Gigabyte doesn't even llist an F1 on their site or a BIOS with this date. Their latest non-beta is the F11. I'll d/l and try it out. I just used the Gigabyte Easy Tune5 Pro utility to set the FSB at 367 for an even 3.3Ghz with no voltmods or any other changes. It's been chugging along in Orthos at that speed for over an hour now without any issues...not a long test to be sure but so far no issues. I also did a run of 3DMark06 at that speed to see if it behaved.....no issues and a huge boost from my Opteron 185 (2.9Ghz) 8800GT OC unit. Best run before was 10,300. Now 12,850. Anyway, it's still indicative that there's no major issues with the CPU or RAM in terms of stability. Thanks for the advice.
