"Linked" multisession disks vs. normal multisession disks
I read that there are two different kinds of multisession disks. There's the
normal kind where each time you write a new session it wastes a little space in order to close and start the session. Then there's another kind where it "links" the old session in so that it doesn't waste space. Is it true that linked multisession doesn't waste space, and how do you choose what kind of multisession disk you are going to make in Nero or Roxio? |

Mike Richter, were you born with "Scam Artist" emblazoned on your face? -------------------------------------- (Mike Richter, any Material Connection w/ Roxio?) http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...mindspring.com (Messages 10, 12 -- 34, 54 -- 69) ( No pipsqueaks have been able to prove ANY of the above is a libel ) ( -- despite Mikey's supposed to have proof of misquotes!!! ) Julia wrote: I read that there are two different kinds of multisession disks. Is it true that linked multisession doesn't waste space, and how do you choose what kind of multisession disk you are going to make in Nero or Roxio? Let's go slow here. First, learn how to make multisession cd with Nero: How-to-Guides for Nero Burning ROM Create a data CD http://nero.com/us/631939466820532.html continue a multisession Data CD create a non-multisession Data CD start a multisession Data CD [2-5] What's a multisession disc? http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq02.html#S2-5 [7-6] How much data can they hold? 650MB? 680MB? http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq07.html#S7-6 |

Is it true that linked multisession doesn't waste space, and how do you choose what kind of multisession disk you are going to make in Nero or Roxio? Please see one of the usual references: the CD-R FAQ or the primer at my WWW site on multisession and packet writing / UDF. Briefly: writing variable-length packets allow you to write multiple times before closing a session. While the session is open, the disc can be read only in a writer in an OS that has packet writing installed. Though there is a theoretical capability for leaving a mastered session open, in practice software does not handle that well. Therefore, any data mastered to a disc will be in a discrete session. Closing a session requires 'wasting' space for the runout/leadout, but then the disc is readable in any CD-ROM drive if it was mastered. If variable-length packets were closed to ISO 9660 Level 3, a modern OS will read the disc without trouble. If closed to UDF 1.5, either packet writing or UDF reader software is required. Finally, to the extent that a fixed-length packet disc can be closed, it is closed when written and there is no signficance to "session" on such a disc. And, yes, that is a very brief overview. The references will fill in the rest. Mike -- http://www.mrichter.com/ |
