Default Good overview of scanners, TWAIN, etc. ?

I hate the ScanGear software that comes with my Canon Pixma. It's UI
is a veritable catalog of What Not To Do.

I thought that the TWAIN standard interface would allow me to find a
better software interface, but I clearly do not understand how the
whole thing works.

Please suggest a site where I can find a clear explanation for what
TWAIN is, how it relates to scanner data, and specifically how to make
the Pixma hardware use what I want it to use.

Thanks
