Default Professional data recovery recommendation

A newly referred customer (as opposed to someone who's been exposed my
repeated exhortations to back up all data religiously) just brought me a
Maxtor Romulus 60 GB drive which has unbacked-up critical data on it. When
I run Powermax it reports a drive recal failure (error UK0E02) & aborts
further testing. The drive is visible to the BIOS when first initialized
but not present in the grid later in the boot sequence where the drive
parameters are reported nor is it visible in Windows Explorer or accessible
from a command prompt. The drive is not making any unusual noise. I have
tried it in 2 different systems (different cables too) as both master &
slave with consistent results.

The local company here that did data recovery (Valtron in Southern
California) went out of business a while back so before I send his drive out
for recovery I wonder if anyone here can tell of experiences good or bad
with OnTrack or any of the other businesses in this line. The customer is
willing & able to pay for such services but I hate to just pick someone
blindly.

Thanks for any input

btb
