oops, don't I feel foolish now! I found deom RCP add ons on my Windows
XP disk that hadn't been pre installed... also the printer/fax
software add-on was missing! After this I downloaded the drivers
again from the Samsung website - just in case they had been updated
from what was on my CD and....

bababadaaaa IT WORKS!!

Sorry to anyone that may have spent time trying to think of a solution
to this. ops:
