My compuler locks up completly
I have:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ Procesor 256MB SDRAM PC133 Mainboard ECS K7S5A 266 MHZ FSB When I work in windows after a while (more rapidly in games) the computer locks-up completly nothing whorks but the terstrt button. Is this because my RAM FSB is only 133 and not 266 My computer works whitouth problem if I slow the bus down to 200 FSB and my procesor is 1800+ Please help me. ============== Posted through www.HowToFixComputers.com/bb - free access to hardware troubleshooting newsgroups. |

the K7S5A is a crappy motherboard and is prone to freezing problem. I had 2
so I know. search the web, there is a K7S5A motherboard support forum there somewhere. They'll tell you how to replace your chipset heatsink and all that stuff but in the end it is because you have a cheap motherboard. "Stephen Austin" wrote in message newspsbplj2g8jwoli1@whoosh... The K7S5A has some startup issues with 'BAD CMOS' (checksum), for no good reason, and sound not always initializing properly (even though device manger says it's working just peachy keen), and it can be picky about memory (not a unique situation, although both my el-cheapo dual 256Meg PC133 SDRAM sticks and el-cheapo dual 256Meg PC2700 DDR RAM sticks worked fine) but I've also had two, v3.1 and now Pro, with no 'lockup' or 'freezing' problems at all. The Pro also has problems with IRQ sharing in PCI slot-1 and you might as well consider it as not even being there. The 'fixes' you refer to are attempts for the 'BAD CMOS' issue, for which there is no fix known to actually work for sure. "Stephen Austin" wrote in message newspsbplj2g8jwoli1@whoosh... I still have my 2 k7s5a mobos working but only with slower durons. With a
faster cpu like an 2000+ and above it will just freeze up just like the original poster said. It will run if he lowers the speed but anything higher and he gets problems with faster cpus. Send it back to whoever sold it to you. I'm sure you'll find some cheap MSI motherboard to replace it "David Maynard" wrote in message ... No it's not because your RAM is only 133Mhz - your CPU is also 133Mhz. If you have DDR ram then the 133 is effectively doubled to 266Mhz but SDRAM works fine. It is likely that the memory is either faulty, or the RAM timings are too aggressive. You could try loading optimized defaults / fail safe defaults in your BIOS - you did'nt load the BIOS top performance did you? Also try Memtest, a DOS utility that will report any errors with the RAM. Another possibilty is temperature, as lowering the FSB to 100 would make it run cooler, but usually this would cause the PC to run very slow and finally turn off... |

Listen GTS
My procesor's temprature is 45-49 C max 52 C and the resistance on a Athlon XP is 85 C this menas thea is not a heat problem as in 1800 it reaches the same temperatures. The lock-up ocurs at even 48 degrees C so I don't know. Secondly I tested my RAM and it works fine(so the program sais). Olso I am using the coolet that came with the processor in the AMD Box Loading the defaults the Bios keeps me on 100/100 FSB not 133/133 as it shoud. ============== Posted through www.HowToFixComputers.com/bb - free access to hardware troubleshooting newsgroups. |

Yes I meant load the defaults and then set the CPU & memory to the correct
speed - it still means eveything else will be set to safe parameters - does it still crash? BTW most mobo's set the CPU to 100 or 133 by jumper on the mobo - is yours a jumperless motherboard? Could you be 'overclocking' the frequency and making the PCI/AGP bus run out of spec? "Radox" wrote in message ...
