Default Computer doesn't know it's a Packard Bell

I have a MultiMedia #8950, S/N P196007583+,mother board PB911, Floppy
Boot BPCS #143153-04, Master CD #175520-02, Recovery CD #172200-01,
Companion CD #172201-01. I couldn't seem to 'restore' my hard drive to
its original state, so I did a 'Format c:' and erased my hard drive,
thinking I could restart with my floppy & Master CD & restore my
computer that way. No Luck! Everything seems to be ok when booting up,
but then at the blue screen I get the message: "This Master CD is for
use with a Packard Bell computer, if this is a Packard Bell computer
call tech support"... It doesn't recognize it's a PB???? It SAYS
Packard Bell on my monitor when booting up! I have been able to
re-install Win98se, but it lacks a lot of drivers! No sound, very
little color options, no modem, etc. How can I get the system to
recognize it IS a PB???? All of the disks seem to be fine when
accessing them in windows, but I just can't get the recovery to boot
all the way to where I can start the process! Please Help!! I read
about a 'tattoo' that I think may be my problem. However, when I
looked on the MasterCD in the drivers file, I could not find the
'tattoo' and the other file I needed to put on my boot disk in order
to re-install the original 'tattoo' on my hard drive. How can I find
the 'tattoo' & get it put back on my hard drive? (If this is indeed my
problem).
Thank You!

After format, did you do a "sys C" to transfer system files to your PC?

Thanks to Simon's excellent instructions, Please follow the procedure
below.

################################################## ####################
##

TATTOO PROCEDU

Create a Windows 98 Boot Diskette
Locate on Master CD's the folder 'DRIVERS'
From this folder copy to the boot diskette the following files:

Tattoo.exe
Shellhs.dll

Remove old HDD and install your new HDD

Power up the system and boot from the diskette into DOS and at the A
prompt
enter the following command:

Tattoo /createhsfromdmi

This will transfer a copy of the tattoo from the motherboard bios to
the
hdd.

New Master CD Boot Disk can be downloaded here
ftp://ftp.pbnec.nl/pub/itemnr/6760030000/Disk1_1.exe

As a follow up, you could also do this with the original hd. I copied
what Simon has written in the past and just noticed you did not change
the hard drive but I am sure the process will work none-the-less for a
lost Tattoo.

I'll try it again... but like I was saying at the end of my original
post, I could not find the tattoo and shellhs files on my master CD or
the restore cd or the companion cd, either. Am I looking in the wrong
place?

I downloaded the boot file you recommended, so I'll give it a try...
after booting with the new boot disk... I will do the following:
a:sys c:
then I will try to find the 'drivers' and the tattoo.exe and
shellhs.dll files on my PB Master CD. (I could not locate them on any
of my cd's the first try)
Or is it on the win98se CD?? (I think I checked that too).
Anyway, I'll retry it all again...
Thanks for your help, I'll get back to you! :-)

Coop,
Not to contradict Elector. I am just wondering, does your PC actually =
uses the "Tattoo.exe" feature, as verification to indicate it as a PBell =
PC, I think that was used in earlier models of PBell's, and used allot =
with many models sold in Europe? But uses the current BIOS and hardware =
setup in your PC, instead, as I think many of the models sold in the =
U.S. have used. Have you upgraded some of the hardware, such as video =
and/or sound card, or replaced/upgraded the motherboard?

I get the same error with my PB955 MM (U.S. circa1998) w/98 1st ED. If I =
have installed a different/new video card or a sound card, or upgraded =
the BIOS past the version that was around at the time PB support left =
the US. And then try to use the PC's PB restore disk, I get the error =
message you mentioned. I have tried to upgrade the motherboard bios =
(versions between 1.09 & 1.27) past the version that I have on it now. =
Downloading from the UK site the different versions for the PB850mb, but =
had to restore it back to version 1.09. Also when I upgraded the video & =
sound cards together and separately, I would get the same error as you =
mentioned. I had to remove these items, before I could use the PB =
restore disk to reinstall OS. And I have looked on my restore disk for =
the "TATTOO" files mention above, and can't find them either.=20

So it might be that the PBell restore disk is checking the BIOS =
version(s) of the motherboard, and it's checking the hardware that is =
present in the PC, to install the appropriate drivers during the =
installation process, that were available with PBell PC's at the time =
the CD was created or was supported by PBell. So if the configuration =
has been changed, the restore disk won't work, but if you restore the PC =
to its original state, the disk will work. Just my observation and =
experiences with my PBell.

Very good point. I did not think of that. In that case a simple reload
of the new drivers for the new devices should fix the situation. Man I
am glad there are people here that think of these things. :-)

Excuse me for 1 minute
Master CD 175520 does not show it was
ever for a 911 MB
My data could be corrupt

The original PB systems matched the bios post with the master cd for the
restore to continue
That was the 1st way

Later on it looked for the info in MBR
I beleive it was placed there
That was for later systems

I do not show a 911 MB using that Master CD
#

I have a copy of the floppy for that system somewhere also
I thought it was a 142XXX # but that may be inconsequential
