Default DVD Burner in 5 Year-old PC

I have a notebook computer, and had been thinking about an external DVD
Burner for it. I am now leaning towards getting an internal DVD burner for
a desktop HP Pavilion that is 5 years old. It is a P-II 400 mhz with 256 MB
of RAM

Any reason why an internal DVD burner wouldn't work in there?

Forgot to mention that the desktop in question has Windows 2000 on it.

Check the minimum specs required at the Drive maker's site?

Find out what the data transfer speed of the drive, e.g. DMA mode 3. Your motherboard port must be able to run at the speed the drive is designed for.
