Default Help: Backup Exec 9.0 backup on to Plextor DVD+RW via Roxio

* Veritas Backup Exec 9.0 Trial Version
* Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4
* Plextor PX-708A DVD+RW device with latest (v1.01) firmware update
* Verbatim DatalifePlus DVD+RW Media (Memorex media *does not* work on
this drive)

I am exploring performing full system backups onto DVD+RW media. I
have spent a lot of time on it so far, and have finally run into a
problem neither I nor the myriad of technical support options
(Veritas, Plextor, Microsoft, and Roxio) available to me can solve.
Please help! Surely I can't be the only one trying to do this.

Veritas has told me as long as I "format the media with a 3rd-party
tool" first, then Backup Exec 9.0 should work fine with it.
Empirically, I feel this to be true, and Backup Exec seems to be
working as well as it can. However I am having difficulty getting my
OS to interface with the DVD media.

I initially tried installing Nero 6 to "format" my DVD+RW media, but
it offered no such option, so I removed it and rebooted. I then
(reluctantly) installed the consumer-oriented Roxio 6 software that
came with my Plextor drive, and checked for an update on the web. I
have the latest version, 6.1.1.7. It seems that "Roxio Drag-to-Disc"
is the mechanism by which Windows 2000 writes files to the DVD media,
and it uses some kind of cache that gets flushed to the DVD upon
media-eject. (An 'eject' takes 2 minutes or so before the media is
physically ejected). Being totally new to rewritable media, I assume
this to be the standard paradigm for working with it. (?)

My problem is as follows. First, Roxio takes about an hour and a half
to "format" the media. I specify "Full format", and I have set the
filesystem to ISO in an 'Advanced' options box somewhere within. I am
under the impression that the 2-minute "quick" format renders the
DVD+RW unreadable outside of "Roxio Drag-to-Disc", which is certainly
not what I want!

Second, once I have "formatted" the DVD+RW media and engaged a Backup
Exec job, there is a problem when the end of media is reached. Backup
Exec works fine, writes to the very last byte of the media, and then
pops up a "Insert new media" notification. However, a Windows 2000
error message also pops up:

"Windows - Delayed Write Failed: Windows was unable to save all the
data for the file \Device\CdRom0\VERITAS\B2D\B2D000022.bkf. The data
has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer
hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file
elsewhere."

When I look in my event log, I see about a half-dozen of the following
messages logged right at the same instance, +/- a few seconds.

"{Lost Delayed-Write Data} The system was attempting to transfer data
from buffers to \Device\CdRom0. The write operation failed, and only
some of the data may have been written to the file." (Source: Cdrom,
event ID 50, type Warning)

I am under the impression that "Roxio Drag-to-Disc" is not properly
handling end-of-media writes, causing Windows 2000's Cdrom device to
fail. I know of no other alternatives. Backup Exec, set to verify
its backup, reports that the written data is corrupted. Can someone
provide me with some advice here?

Thanks very much for your time,
-Jeff Ishaq
