OT (kind of) Good deals on wireless 802.11g networking components

Well, I resisted the urge to go wireless long enough. I've been doing more
travelling in areas with "wireless zones". Plus, I now have cable modem
Internet and the only room with A/C is nowhere near the cable modem. Thus,
if I want to surf the web without sweating my butt off this summer, I need a
wireless connection to my cable modem. I have a perfectly good Zyxel (Zyxel
makes routers for Netgear) wired 10/100 router. I was going to just add a
wireless access point to it. Then I started doing research and realized
that a decent WAP was likely going to be more expensive than replacing my
router with a new wireless one.

Anyway, I did extensive online research to find a good deal on routers and
wireless access cards for notebook computers. I decided up front that my
new router was going to be 802.11g (plus backward compatible with 802.11b),
but was willing to settle for the slower 802.11b for my *current* notebooks,
if I could get that cheaper.

I was really shopping on price, but do prefer certain brands based on good
experience with those brands in the past. I found the following deals, both
on Amazon. I think these are really GOOD deals on name-brand current
technology wireless equipment right now. So I thought I'd pass them along
in case anyone else is looking, at the moment. Note that I don't work for
Amazon or J & R. But right now, you can get a Netgear WGR614 802.11g
wireless router for ~$60 through Amazon with free shipping and a $20 mail-in
rebate. I hate rebates, but if the rebate thing works out, that means a
really GOOD, name-brand wireless 802.11g wireless router for forty bucks. I
also found a Belkin brand 802.11g wireless card (f5d7010) for notebooks for
~$30 at Amazon (through J & R). Shipping for me on that one was about five
bucks, but still a great deal. IMHO For less than a hundred bucks total
including shipping, I got 802.11g. If the rebate works out, it'll be less
than eighty bucks! You could easily pay twice that much before shipping
charges for components like this. -Dave
