Default keyboard problem

Machine is old Presario 7599 desktop.

Milk was spilled on keyboard while computer was running. Plugged in new
keyboard and system was locked up. After powering off and attempting to
restart, the Compaq splash screen shows up on the monitor, and a flashing
cursor in upper left corner. This stays on screen indefinetely, and never
advances from there. Nothing happens by any keyboard action (F keys
included). Tried unplugging for awhile, same situation. When first powered
up, the lights on keyboard flass momentarily, then go out.

It was suggested that possibly the "keyboard buffer" was damaged, and a
possible workaround would be to use a USP keyboard, which I don't have.

Any other ideas, info?

Thanks for any help, Todd McD

IF you're not scared of this ... power off - unplug PC.
Disconnect cables to disk drive. Turn on - any difference - Like " No HDD
installed"? Last shot :
In case an item was changed in the BIOS, and it just needs resetting to
get the video going ...
use the following steps to reset the BIOS back to its default
configuration:
1.. Turn on the computer and press the keyboard key that enters the BIOS
Setup screen key when the keyboard light comes on. The key to enter the
BIOS should be one of the following:
a.. For HP Pavilions desktop computers that came with Windows XP or
previous versions of Windows, press F1.
b.. Compaq Presario desktop computers built after 2002, press F1.
c.. Compaq Presario desktop computers built prior to 2002, press F10.
2.. Wait 5 seconds.
3.. Press the F5 key to restore the default settings of the BIOS.
4.. Press Enter to accept the change and wait five seconds.
5.. Press the F10 and then the Enter key to save the changes and exit
from the BIOS.
6.. The monitor should now display the first screens received from the
computer (the logo screens).
7.. If not, try Power off/on one last time (Hopefully #6 showed info).
8.. Still nothing ... I would think it's 'looking for disk drive'. If
you wait - just let it sit - forever - does it eventually give you any
error ?
i.. let us know how it goes.

Why not buy a USB keyboard? You can get one for $10.

Default keyboard problem

I did try that, but same thing.

I tried removing, then reinstalling CMOS battery, and now this:

When machine powered on, it still goes to and stops at splash screen, but
now in upper l corner of screen, it starts at 1 and counts up to 255 MB, and
says OK, and then a flashing cursor on upper r side of screen. Power lights
do stay on on the USB keyboard, but only thing different is that now if you
hit F10 as first powering up, it stops at 1MB, and does not continue to
count up. Other than that difference, no change.

Thanks again, Todd McD

Default keyboard problem

Unfortunately, at this point I have to speculate that spilling water on the
keyboard probably caused an electric discharge that damaged more than the the
keyboard port on the motherboard.

I think I would try one last thing in hope that the board revives and boots.
Open up the case, unplug the computer (very important!), and remove the
coin-sized C2032 battery. Let the computer sit for an hour or so. Put the
battery back in, plug in the wall power and see what happens. Sometimes the
data stored in CMOS on the motherboard gets all messed up, and all kinds of
symptoms occur... Ben Myers

Can you get into BIOS ? ( press F10 - as above instructions)
NORMALLY, while the PC is blinking in upper right , you can press F10 to
get into setup.
After that period ( normally 3-4-5 seconds), THEN it should access disk
drive and boot.

If you CAN get into BIOS - go to Boot Diagnostic Screen setup. Read he
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...9&lang=en#N426
and scroll all the way down the page to see BOOT SCREEN menu.
You want to turn on the POST screen and TURN OFF the logo screen to see
"what does the computer see for devices" at boot time.
You then turn off/on and you will see stuff happening as it powers up.
When it hangs - you'll know where it is in the boot procedure.
Did you disconnect disk drive as I said earlier ? No message ? ( Like "
disk drive not found" ?)
