Things like daughter cards, cd drives, hard drives, ram and processors are commodity items. And can be bought anywhere reputable. Retail or online. Panels, and plastics, and hard drive cages and rails, tend to be proprietary, and it's either buy one from the manufacturer, or go fishing on ebay or a used computer dealer. It's a hit and miss kind of thing. Power supplies can go either way, but there's been an increasing trend toward standardization. Heatsinks and fans can go either way also, but more are standard than not, now. Floppy drives can go either way too (they're electrically the same, but mounting may be an issue). Of course with THOSE, there's an increasing trend toward obsolescence. And not before time. |

HP stocks few, if any, parts for Presarios. Your choices for buying are
somewhat limited. There are 3rd party parts houses who will ask for your first born son in return for a crappy little piece of plastic. The good news is that the electronics in all the recent Pentium 4 and AMD Sempron Presarios are largely standard commodity items. The exceptions are the motherboard, because of the Compaq-specific BIOS, and any floppy drive, because of the peculiar eject button and absence of a plastic front bezel. If you replace the motherboard with another standard mATX board, much of the software on a hard drive will simply not work because it is keyed to the Compaq BIOS. As for the cosmetic parts like side panels and plastic front bezel or interior cables, your best bets are to find a similar case in good condition, then mix and match the good parts from two cases. You can find Compaq case parts now and again on eBay, craigslist, and at local computer recyclers (a lot like going to the auto junk yard)...
