Default Presario 1650 laptop - floppy drive

The floppy drive on my 1650 laptop would do nothing but make a grinding
noise.
Thinking I could run without a floppy I removed the cable from the zif
connector and fired it up.
It stopped the noise but it also shut down the cd-rom drive.
Are these two somehow interconnected?
Im wondering if I might have accidentally killed the cd drive by trying
to run it without the floppy.
Any ideas??
