PC4000 RAM and Graphic Card advice...

Just a couple of questions, feel free to ignore the graphics card one - it's
OT here anyway.

1. I have a NF7-S (v2) that I'm forced to run at:
Multiplier = 11 (higher than desired)
FSB=223 (lower than desired)

because my ram is generic PC3200, el cheapo ebuyer stuff.

Is it better to purchase PC4000 ram for overclocking? Which brand are people
having success with?







2. I want to spend roughly 150GBP on a new graphics card. It will mainly be
used for games playing. Any recommendations?

not lower is it - it's higher, have you tried the correct 10x200 ?

A Gig of Corsair 1GB DDR XMS4000PT TwinX (2x512MB) Platinum CAS3 will
cost you £180 [ish], but do you need it - see above 10x200 on PC3200.

At the 11x223 he mentioned (2.453 GHz), he's significantly beating the
3200+ speeds (2.2 GHz) already...

You would probably get a somewhat FSB/memory clock with the PC4000, but
the question is "how much?" No matter how fast the memory is, you'll hit a
point where the motherboard just won't do a higher clock. If you think that
point is significantly higher than what you're already getting, you may want
to give it a shot. If that point isn't likely to be much higher, then you
have to ask if the cost is worth the small improvement to you.

If you can wait a bit for an AGP version to be released, the GF 6600's
will be about $200 US, and will be incredibly formidable cards. ATI, I'm
sure, is working on similarly priced cards to compete. It's probably a bit
more than you were going to spend, but the difference in gaming between it
and whatever you'd get for $150 GBP (or even 200) right now is going to be
pretty significant.

suggesting I try 10x200?

As far as locking goes - no, no problems here. It's a mobile athlon 2500.

There's only about a 3% performance increase for every 33MHz you raise the
FSB while running the CPU at the same speed. I don't think I'd worry
about it. Now I suppose if you MB will support 266MHz FSB and memory bus,
you could gain maybe 5%. is it worth it? If you think so, get faster ram.

Yes, a very good point.

I should just buy a getting a decent graphics first, rather than grab at
2500+ speeds. I think if my current speed was anything over 2500, then I'd
be satisfied. As it is, 2455Mhz seems like it's calling to me to run through
the gates of the 2.5Ghz entrance!

The pros are 2400Mhz with SSE of XP cpu's vs. a supposdely max of 1400MHz
Tbird w/o SSE. And of course not having to buy a new MB and ram, reloading
OS's, drivers, etc.

The only con is the small amount of performance lost on a slower FSB. Not
even noticable except in benchmarks.
