Default compaq presario laptop

One nag could be the actual connector socket, with all the pulling and
pushing the poor thing maybe only held by the soldered contacts,
solder being part tin and lead is very soft and easy broken.

A checked round the soldered joints could prove fruitful, you need to
be careful though, the print (copper tracks) are fine and may consist
of plated through holes to connect one side of the board to the
other.

I am of course assuming when you say 'the light is on the power cord'
that you mean the actual power supply unit itself.... and not the
light on the computer in which case my comment is useless as the
power is reaching the computer via the socket.

You could always try the battery by substitution one way or the other
to prove the battery is at at fault, these things aren't cheap
though.
