Suggestions for possible upgrade path?
Hey all,
I'm hoping to solicit opinions on a variety of possible upgrade scenarios, or whether an upgrade is even really worth it... Currently, I have the following gaming rig: -XP1700+ (JIUHB) oc'd to 2.05 gHz (2400+) (11.0 x 185 FSB) -Thermaltake Volcano 7 with the sensor modded for continuous max fan speed - Abit NF7-S v1.0 and the latest bios - 1 x 512meg of Crucial PC2700 (rather decent mem for the price -- does 192FSB max, very stable at 185 mHz) - Antec SX635 mini-tower with 350W true power and 2 antec 80mm case fans - Radeon 9600 Pro vid card Now here's my dilemma: I recently received a p4 2.8B Dell workstation for my desk at work, and am delighted at how **quiet** this box is! I'm happy with the performance of my Athlon rig at home, but I never really realized how noisy it was until I got the P4. In my quest for cyber-quietness, these are the options I am contemplating: 1) Change the Volcano 7 heatsink and case fans to a quieter heatsink/fan combo and two Vantec Stealth fans. The problem here is that because of the rather extreme overclock of the 1700, I would need some fairly capable cooling, and it seems that "quietness" and "performance" are mutually exclusive when it comes to CPU cooling. I've been checking out the reviews on the "Zalman CNPS 6000cu" flower cooler, but I'm not sure it will fit into the Antec minitower. Can anybody comment on this sink and fan, or perhaps suggest a combo that would be significantly quieter than the Volcano 7? 2) Upgrade to a Barton 2500 or 2800 to get the same/comparable CPU performance without any significant FSB overclocking. This would allow my choice of cooler to be less critical...any suggestions here? 3) Scrap the AMD setup entirely and get a comparable P4 (say, a 2400C or 2600C) with its presumably quieter "stock" cooler. It appears that somewhere around the 2800 Barton the price of a P4 becomes very competitive. If I drop the cash for a higher end Barton, I might as well get a comparable P4 , no? The problem here is that I would have to dump the PC2700 DDR for some higher end PC3200 or PC3500 that will accomadate the 200mHz FSB for either a Barton OC or p4. This option could get pricey, I think... 4) Suck it up and get earplugs. Your input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in adnce, Brogan |

I have had volcano hsf in the past they were the worst noisemakers out of all of them They cooled great ! But the noise OMG that fan screams I changed the fans on mine to a regular fan using the same screw pattern. Then I got a Vantec Aeroflow Now it's cool enough and quiet enough 1700 @ 2.22 ghz, 202 fsb \\\//// ( o o ) ----------------------oOOO--(_)--OOOo--------------------------- Chameleon Cages Yes! The reason the P4 is quiter is because it is a Dell. I have always built my own computers but the other day I was browsing through Office Depot and was amazed at how quite the Athlon XP2400+ Compaq system they had was. The Compaq system uses components that we would use to build our own system, namely an nForce2 board to start with. But it was SO quite. I have come to the conclusion that it is easy to build a computer but difficult to build one quite. THAT's what you are buying with the extra money for a name brand pre-built. |

Thanks for your suggestions, guys...
Regarding the SLK800 with Vantec fan: is that an 80mm stealth fan attached to the heatsink with screws at each corner? Or is there an actual vantec heatsink fan (if so, haven't seen it advertised...) This sounds like a good solution...I've also seen the GlobalWin CAK4-88T in a few reviews, and is supposed to be both quiet and good cooling for overclockers... In any event, it looks like I can certainly keep my rig intact... "The TweakOholic" wrote in message able.rogers.com... That's exactly what I was going to suggest. I have an SLK800 with Vantec Stealth fans and a Thermaltake Silent PurePower PS.
