Default SATA II drives on a SATA I interface?

I have a Dimension 8400 and need to purchase a new hard drive. SATA II is
out now and I'm wondering if a SATA II drive will work reliably on the
SATA I interface that is in the Dimension 8400. I've read varying
experiences via pages I found from Google. SATA I drives are still
avaliable, but the pricing and size avaliability is nothing like that of
the SATA II drives.

Oh and all of my expansion slots are filled so I can't get a SATA II
expansion card.

I have a Dell 8400 with both SATA 1 and 2 HDs. The SATA 2 drive is slightly
faster (HDTune) but maybe because it's newer.

most sata II drives have larger buffer sizes, like 8mb or 16mb.
so make sure you consider that as well.
that could be why the new one is faster.

Good point. The new SATA 2 has 16 MB buffer, the SATA 1 has 8 MB.
