Thunderbird machine_check_exception errors
Wes Newell Wrote: On Sun, 10 Jul 2005 02:12:01 +0100, steve wrote: - Have a Thunderbird 850, 128M Ram, GA-7ZX motherboard with VIA KT133 chipset. Was running Win98 and had a lot of problems with system spontaneously rebooting itself. Thought it was spyware which system was infested with so bought WD 80Gig HD and installed Win XP Pro. Still reboots itself, and often get Machine_check_exceptions. Error report says STOP: 0X0000009C (0X00000004, 0x00000000, 0x2000000, 0x00020151) Don't think it's heat, BIOS says processor 30 deg. C, system 70 deg. C. Heatsink is clean (was dusty a while back while on Win98, cleaning didn't help. Ran MEMTEST for 9 hours, no errors found. Reboot problem seems to come when using system more, graphics, games, ect. but not always. Often machine check error comes when logging in as a user. Any ideas? What do the codes mean?- Sounds like a power problem or possibly overheating. For power, check for bulging or leaking caps on the MB, a weak PSU, or possible local AC power drops. There's no way the system temp can be 70C so i suspect it's either totally wrong, or you have read them backwards with the cpu temp being 70C which is still very high. Take the side cover off and monitor temps to determine whats what. Normal cpu temp for that cpu should be no more than 60C max with a lousy cooler. A decent cpu cooler should keep it under 50C for sure. You didn't mention what cooler you had and thatwould have helped in determining possible problems. Case fans? When you cleaned the cooler, did you remove it and reapply thermal paste? -- KT133 MB, CPU @2400MHz (24x100): SIS755 MB CPU @2330MHz (10x233) Need good help? Provide all system info with question. My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php Verizon server http://mysite.verizon.net/res0exft/cpu.htm Cleaned out the dust from the heatsink, took the fan off and did a good job on the fins, did not remove heatsink. Don't know the brand/model of heatsink or fan. I have an IR gun, reads max of about 48C on fins. Installed MotherBoard Monitor 5. It's a hot day, right at the moment it reads 37 case temp, 71 CPU. Has a sensor 3 showing on dashboard, but I can't figure out what that is for...reads 26. Only other thing on dashboard that isn't in the green is the Core 1 voltage, says 0.21 V and is very far below the green. Core 0 voltage says 1.78, slightly low but still in the green. What is correct Core 1 Volts? Can I change it? -- steve |

Remove the cooler and check the thermal paste and reinstall. Go here and see if you can determine the cooler you have. It's probably an older model or the stock AMD cooler which sucks. http://www.dansdata.com/coolercomp.htm Only other thing on dashboard that isn't in the green is the Core 1 voltage, says 0.21 V and is very far below the green. Your CPU voltage (core 0) is correct, 1.75v for the tbird core. -- KT133 MB, CPU @2400MHz (24x100): SIS755 MB CPU @2330MHz (10x233) Need good help? Provide all system info with question.
