I looked on ebay in my country for one of these, hoping to find
a hexcore CPU, but there were none. Tons of sellers with 990X at
silly prices. Also older stuff like Core 2, Pentium 4, even K6-3.
So did Intel make hardly any of this model?

The 980X might be available cheaper now that the 990X is out.

Actually there is no 970X: I was lead astray by sloppy people
who recited 970X, 98OX and 990X when the 970 is locked, so
no suffix. Anyway the 970 seems to be not common. I found a
local computer shop that had some leftover, but they wanted
499 A$ (= 520 US$) for it. I can get a Phenom sixpack with
mainboard and RAM for less that that.

I am VERY happy with my 950s, I run as virtual hosting servers, not games, one
is o/c (curiosity, not need for speed), one stock. Both dead stable.
