Help - gfx card driver install problems
I bought the ATI 4670 per the messages earlier in the week, but i'm
hitting a strange problem, and haven't been able to figure out how the hell to work around it... The drivers simply refuse to install, either as myself (in the admin group), as administrator from a safe boot, and any other combination I can think of from letting the hardware wizard try to do it, right clicking on the .inf files to install them from safe mode etc. From safe mode as administrator, i'm seeing a message about policies in force on the computer stop me installing the display driver (I seem to have got the other components installed OK) The previous driver for the stock ATI X600 were removed as far as possible beforehand, but brought to mind issues where i'd tried to use newer drivers direct from ATI and it'd fail consistently ever time. Any clues would be welcome, because it's annoying the crap out of me now ! |

Help - gfx card driver install problems
Hi!
The drivers simply refuse to install, either as myself (in the admin group), as administrator from a safe boot, and any other combination I can think of from letting the hardware wizard try to do it, What (if any) error is given when you try in normal mode, with or without the installer? If you don't get one, is the System Event Log recording anything? right clicking on the .inf files to install them That won't work outside of special INF files that install software...like the old TweakUI installation method. from safe mode etc. ....and I'm pretty sure that won't do it, because required services and supporting drivers won't be running. I absolutely would not expect that safe mode driver installations would function as intended. Several that I have tried did not--and sometimes I had a much worse mess on my hands afterwards. Do you have .NET and the latest Windows Installer in place? The complete ATI package requires .NET for Catalyst Control Center. If you don't want .NET, a simple driver (without CCC) is available. I think there is a need for more information. Posting to the ATI group (alt.comp.periphs.videocards.ati) might help as well. William |

From the error log; Driver Install: user must be a member of the Administrators group (but I am) I absolutely would not expect that safe mode driver installations would function as intended. Think so :-} Just downloading the standalone driver now I think there is a need for more information. Posting to the ATI group (alt.comp.periphs.videocards.ati) might help as well. OK thanks, i'll report on the standalone shortly too :-) |

Even with the stand-alone driver (which still seems to want to use the
catalyst installer) I get the same error as before; From the error log; Driver Install: user must be a member of the Administrators group It had a good go at copying all the files across, it just gives an "installation complete, warnings occurred" with the error as shown above :-( |

Hi!
From the error log; Driver Install: user must be a member of the Administrators group That is really very strange. Have you tried creating a new administratively privileged user account to see what happens then? I also wonder about the driver signing requirement...Windows 2000 and XP both can be set to reject non-signed drivers. I would have thought that ATI would be signing all their drivers, but I still see hardware vendors that do not. It's worth a shot. My Computer Properties Hardware tab Driver Signing button. William |

I know from experience that some installers won't work if run from an encrypted folder. I don't remember the exact error message anymore, but it was something to do with not having the right privileges or something of that nature. -- Nick Clarke's Third Law: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." |

I'll chip in with a wild guess: are you trying to install from an encrypted
folder, or is your temp folder encrypted? 'fraid not - i've never used an encrypted drive / folder, as I know how much more awkward it makes emergency data recovery ! |
