Default Help Revive my Dead Presario 4814

The kids' Compaq Presario 4814 has no power. When I plug the box into
the wall outlet the fan turns for about 3 seconds then stops. I'm
wondering if it may be the power supply. Anything else I should
consider before spending $71 for a new power supply?

Well, yeah, just about everything else.

I'd disconnect the HDD and FDD, remove any cards and memory, and see if it
stays on longer and tries to boot. If so, the one of the devices is shorting
and the PS is turning itself off. Add the devices back to discover which one,
and replace it. If not, then its either the systemboard (or something on the
systemboard, like audio or video), or the PS. Buy the PS somewhere you can
return it if you don't need it.....my guess, and good luck...

I'd also suggest that you disconnect the CD-ROM. Also, reseat the Card
Cage, and follow Dale's suggestions.

Try the card cage (backplane board) first. It should make a noticeable
"snap" when it seats into the slot on the systemboard.
