Default 128k upgrade - slowed down

Presario 4814
Upgraded from Windows 95 to Windows 98
Had 32k of ram
Added 128k to first slot and put 32k in 2nd slot.

Now programs load much slower than before the added ram.
Is there some additional setting I should tweek?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Just off hand, have you checked to see the added RAM is being picked by the
computer?

Have you tried it with just the 128 Mb stick in the machine? Ram always
runs at the speed of the slowest stick.

Also, try swapping the two sticks in their slots?

The Compaq Presario, as originally configured, will cache only the
first 128 megabytes of RAM. You need to upgrade the L2 cache to
512 kilobytes to cache above that memory size. Search for "cache
tester" in Google to look for a free program to test cache usage.
The program usually has to run from pure DOS, so create yourself a
bootable floppy disk with enough room for the program and
Smartdrive. Do not include any upper memory managers on the
bootable disk. You will see a drop off in speed when you get above
128 MB. Try running the computer with just the 128 MB chip in it to
see the difference.
