Default 1800XL-181 Notebook problem

Hello all,

I recently acquired a used Compaq Presario 1800XL-181 notebook. The seller
didn't have the original disks or manuals.

It is 500 MHz, 6 gig hard drive (partitioned by Compaq with its original
software), 64 megs of ram on the system board and 64 megs additional via an
add on board (Crucial brand), 8 megs of video
ram, ATI Rage I believe. I worked on this thing all day yesterday. I
solved most of its problems with one exception.

I reloaded the original factory software off of its extra partition, which
was Windows 98 SE. I then
upgraded that to Windows ME. The problem that I'm still having at the
moment is that it keeps shutting down on me.

I updated the bios from the software off the Compaq site and also
the battery firmware. That didn't make any difference and it didn't matter
if it was under battery power or AC power. Sometimes when it tries to boot
into Windows it will turn itself off, not hibernate but totally
off. It has also done this when it is accessing the other drives within
Windows. For instance, I was trying to load a large game onto it and it
would shut down in the middle of the installation. Strangely, it didn't
shut down at all when I was reloading the partition software, or when
Windows ME was installing which took a bit of time. I could also reboot the
system and then the install would complete with no issues. It is
intermittent.

Someone else suggested that the system board is bad. If so, I'm not going
to be happy. I looked online last night and the cheapest one I found was
$350. :-(

Maybe I should just sell it for parts?

Any suggestions you may have I would greatly appreciate them.

Thanks,
Lisa M.
