Default screen problem

Help,
I have a Compaq LTE5300 laptop with a screen problem. A white line has
started in the middle of the screen. It started out about a 1/8 inch and is
now about 3/8 inch. I didn't drop it or hit it. Is the screen no good or
could it be a system problem ? I have a second question I have another
laptop that is dead. I was going to change the screen but it is a different
make and the high voltage supply is different. If I change the screen and
the supply will it work or will it damage it ?
Thanks,
Dave B.
