Does anyone have any creative uses for CD/DVD coasters that
result from bad burns, or free AOL/Earthlink/PeopleSoft, etc CDs?

I did read that the shiny reflective underside scares any birds
(or pigeons) because they are scared of their own reflections.

Urban myth. And I dont want to scare them anyway.

Why not? I get out my Hallowe'en costume around once a month just to
keep them on their toes.

Tad impractical with my very large trees anyway.

What do you do?

Throw them in the garbage.

I hope you don't just throw them in the garbage.

More fool you.

Send them to Janet Jackson - she'll wear them.

Perhaps some birds are scared by reflections, but at least some species
treat their own reflections as intruders that must be dealt with. I
know that cardinals and painted buntings, among other species, injure
themselves (some fatally) by attacking their own reflected images in
window glass.

As to disposal of discs--

1. Lobby for a law similar to the German one about packaging material
that requires issuers to take unwanted ones back _at their expense_.

2. Clean up your burning technique so that you don't create a large
number of coasters.

3. Start using the dreaded RW discs instead of Rs--not very wise as far
as I'm concerned.

This problem is a very small part (so far) of a very, very large and
growing problem of what to do with disposable material. Unfortunately,
my city accepts only two kinds of plastic in its recycling
program--numbers 1 and 2. They suffer from tunnel vision and see the
value of accepting only material that can be sold immediately at a
profit and ignoring the cost of filling up sanitary landfills with
material that won't degrade.

The pidgeons particularly dislike the "Yanni at the Acropolis"
CDs,,,,,,,,, it scares them away every time.

Dental patients too.
