Default Dead Compaq Presario 1200xl

My laptop won't boot. I've been everywhere trying to solve this problem. I
have a 1200XLxxx with 320Meg Ram and a K6 500Mhz CPU and has a DVD and I
think about a 6Gig HD. I can't even ascertain which model it is, i.e.xxx.
There seemed to be about a million configurations to that model. I can't
find any place that has manuals or any other info. Anyway, my real problem
follows.

The computer was given to me by someone that had given up on it. It
wouldn't boot and was put away for a year or 2. When I got it, it booted
right up. I fooled around with it for a few hours, then it froze and I
couldn't shut it down. I unplugged the power and removed the battery. When I
went to restart, it wouldn't power up. I was sure that it must be the DC
charger board located next to the FD so I bought one on Ebay. Installed it
and same problem. Could a dead CMOS Battery cause the problem? Where is it
located? On the Mobo? It doesn't seem to be on the part exposed when you
pull off the keyboard and palm rest. Hope I don't have to strip the unit all
the way down to get at it.

Anyway, any insight would be very welcome. I was pretty impressed with the
performance of the unit and the price was right, but definately not worth
sending in to a shop for repair.

The battery is under the heat sink plate under the key board. On my
presario 1200xl 106.
