Default NTLDR missing press alt+ctrl+del to restart

just built a new system am using a hard drive i have previously used and
have been unable to format... the cd-rom isnt botting the windows XP disk
when i insert it into the drive instead it is displaying the NTLDR missing
message

what should i do?

i need to get it so i can format this drive... i had it as a slave drive in
my previous computer was unable to format it as it was being used by another
process... i figured i could just format it as an NTFS system with the
windows XP cd when i come to finish off my build but here i cant even boot
windows with the cd.....

anyone have any tips please this is getting to be annoying!

you need to set the bios to boot first from cd rom
then you can format the drive and install a fresh version of XP

Sounds like your jumpers are wrong on the drives... Shouldn't matter though.
BIOS doesn't pay attention to primary/secondary/master/slave when you choose
the media to boot from. The only time it matters at all is if you have an
OLD BIOS and multiple drives. You might have to boot from the first if you
have multiple.

HDD should be PRIMARY MASTER. The CD should be SECONDARY MASTER.

booting from ATAPI cd rom
press any key to boot from CD-ROM

And hit a key here and the installer will load and the Windows installation
will begin.

NTDLR Missing press alt+ctrl+del to restart

You didn't hit a key so it tried to boot the hard drive... or your CD is
busted (disk or drive - could be either)

SOunds like you have bigger problems... Anything overclocked? Is memory OK?
Try getting a MemTest86 boot disk and let that run for a while.

Dunno? Not smart enough??? : )

Download the HDD utilities and zero the drive... then there won't be any
NTLDR any more.

if i was to purchase a brand new hard disk there would be no NTLDR at all so
why the hell do i need it now?

the memory is fine 512 ddr333 pc 2700 crucial loads up in bios fine.. no
overlocking done yet at all this system has just been built thanks for the
help.. i have a funny feeling it is the hard drive thats causing the bother.

i didnt have time press any key to boot.. the NTLDR thing appeared again...
also if i have the hard disk as primary master it will try to boot first.. i
dont want that i want to boot windows from the CD

It sounds like it might be an issues with the harddrive not being set to
Primary master. If the drive has never held an OS then chances are its set as a
slave.

Check the jumper on the drive and make sure its set as master, there should be
a diagram on it and if not check the manuifacturs website for where the jumpers
go (IBM drives are nortorius for being a pain with their jumpers).

After you have it set as master make sure the cable thats attached to it is on
the IDE 1 (primary) port. From there in bios you should have it show up as the
master on ide 1(primary), make sure your bios has either "Auto" or "User
defined" as the setting (I would recomend auto). Sometimes if no drive is
deceted bios's will default to the "None" setting, thus not detecting a drive.

See if this helps, if your still getting the NTLDR error try the recomendation
here
www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm

If nothing works, then your just going to have to bite the bullet and reformat
and reload the OS. If your worried about backing up data from the drive you can
always yank the drive and put in another system and copy over files. Its usualy
what I do when backing up friends systems before reloading an OS.

After the OS is loaded and is running stable then either network the computers
and trasnfer the files back or put the drive back in the old machine and copy
things over. Just make sure never to put your drive in to the other machine as
its primary master and you should be fine.

Hope this helps

when it says to hit the key...hit the key...you should have a few seconds to
do so
if you don't...you will never get your OS installed!

Silly question probably but you did set the jumpers on both drives (hard
disk and CD) to Master did you?
