Default Windows pop ups

Running XP Pro.

Two items are in my system tray. One is Java and the Other Windows.
Everytime I turn the computer on, both pop up telling me there are
updates available. \
I once let Java install and it screwed my computer up, had to use
Restore and I won't let it install but I can't figure out how to get
rid of it.

The other is a Windows Update about authenticaty the Windows.
Again I do not want it to pop up, It just started a month ago. And I
can't find out to get rid or disable it.

You can turn off automatic updates for both Java, and WinXP.
For Java, I always uninstall the previous version before installing
the newer version. You can install the WinXP updates manually.

As the other said, you can turn off automatic updating
in Control Panel. As for "authenticating Windows", see he

Microsoft is currently running a very sleazy campaign,
installing "Windows Genuine Advantage" nags on
a number of XP machines that have auto-updating enabled.
The new software comes with a Mickey Mouse EULA that
forbids you from uninstalling it or crticizing it.
