Default SE6 strange problem--Help.

This is an old SE6 board, on which i just put 512M of RAM and a 40G
HD. It runs XP like a dream( I do not play games)---except the
problems below.

It occasionally refuses to boot. Sometime it would just turn the fans
on and nothing(not even the POST) on the screen, and it will refuse to
turn off unless I pull the power plug.

Sometimes it will boot half way and stop at the windows logo.

On exactly the same config, it can also boot completely and work like
an angel for the whole day.

I changed a few graphic cards with no success. It will, however always
work if I leave it to its onboard VGA.

This board was bought in Hong Kong. Would this be the same capacitor
problem leading to the court case settlement in the US?

The problem you describe is almost certainly the capacitors, onboard video
will work for a while but that may also give you problems in the future,
Look at the capacitors near the cpu, the tops are supposed to be flat if
they are swollen or have a residue on them they are bad, check if they can
be replaced under the abit program, If not a competent electronics tech can
replace them but it is not usually cost effective. Finally as the supply of
815 AGP motherboards has pretty much dried up so a new motherboard is not an
option (DO NOT BUY USED AS NEARLY ALL OF THE USED BOARDS I HAVE SEEN EXHIBIT
THE SAME PROBLEM) you may be best off replacing the whole thing, the only
drawback to that is the 512MB is SDR and is not compatible with a newer
motherboards.
Good luck

PS I presently have 5 socket 370 processors that are homeless for the same
reason and I am not alone
