Hells trouble with P4P800-E deuxe

HELP!!!

I recently built my new little setup and started having dramas from the
onset
upon advice from smart bunnies here i started again
Reseated ram and ran memtest without errors
cleared cmos
restored all bios defaults
formatted HD and reinstalled windows

now all seemed happy for a short while until my system froze - i was
watching tv playing freecell and msn messenger was running thats it .. i hit
the reset button(as you do when 3 finger salute does nothing)

when it reset just after the ram test there was allsorts of garbled junk
down the bottom of the black screen with the american megatrends logo then
it came up with INS pressed select F1 to enter setup F2 to load setup
defaults
i hit F2 which must have reset bios defaults as i got the Ai splash screen

i was hoping my original dramas were OS related but i was wrong does this
new drama hint that i may have a problem with the motherboard ??


System is
Win 98-se (all updates done - i got that far)
P4P800-E Deluxe (bios 1001.004 - original)
P4 2.8 E
Some cheap ATI radeon vid card
lite on dvd rom
lite on dvd-rw
seagate 80g

My suggestion would be to update the BIOS to 1002. The latest BIOS has
better support for the Prescott Chip (At least I think that is what the "E"
denotes, I can't remember off the top of my head, so forgive me if I am
wrong.) This would be my only suggestion as my P4P800-E Del is still in its
box waiting for a processor to turn up, so have not had time to experiment
myself yet.

As for how to flash a BIOS, I'll leave that upto the experts on this forum.

go get the new 1003.001 bios (ftp.asuscom.de) and let us know - in case
of trouble - which ram you are using.

I recommend Windows 2000 Pro instead,
with SP4, it's stability is far and beyond that
of Win98se, and no XPSP2 issues.

2) Get a handle on BIOS settings; they can
make or break any system, especially critical
in case you want to overclock:

3) You need to start with good components, especially: stable
RAM, quality power supply, stable video card, have good
cooling/air flow, and of course update all drivers.

BTW, this particular problem seems video
card related. I would start by disabling video shadowing,
and cacheing of video bios, in your bios settings. They
don't really help performance in Windows, and can
cause more problems than they are worth.

im tempted to disagree on the grounds that the video card wouldnt effect the
system when its ripping a dvd and nothing more would it ???

either way i dont have those settings in the bios that i can see .. its a
cheap card .. maybe it doesnt do it ??
there again its a cheap card and your probably right .. but i dont know how
to fix it !

That's not what you said in your original post.

They're BIOS settings, they should be there regardless of the video
card used. The video card is the main suspect here so it's worth
changing those settings to more neutral. Are you sure your video card
is compatible with the motherboard? This high-end m/b is not compatible
with some cheap very old AGP cards. There should be something
about this in your m/b manual.

Also, like I said, the other usual suspects are RAM, and power supply. And
having a stable OS helps as well, though this particular problem seems
more like a hardware/BIOS issue to me, since you had a garbled screen
even before getting into Windows.
