Default Using spare time on your Nvidia card to help medical research

There are several medical research projects using spare time
available on computers that connect to these projects. Now,
some of them are trying to be able to do the same with spare
time on Nvidia cards.

You might want to watch these sites to see which of them is
able to use spare time on Nvidia cards first:

http://folding.stanford.edu/

http://www.gpugrid.net/

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

None of them look ready to invite the general public to
partipate with the Nvidia cards part yet, but all of them
are making some effort in this direction. Some of them
can let the general public offer spare time on their CPUs
now.

Those of you with good backups and the appropriate
computer knowledge may even want to participate in
their beta testing.

the folding (stanford) project offer a GPU2 client which works exceptionally
well, especially on cards with an overclocked shader, the client does not
affect day to day use, and I can still play games assassin's creed and
crysis) as the client only used free gpu cycles.

Please note that the concept behind the "at home" and similar stuff
is that you have to leave your computer on and that you might as
well do useful and of no cost to you.

However, many new graphics cards reduce power use significantly
when the card is not busy.

For example, for the Nvidia GTX 280, power (reportedly) goes
from just under 240W to about 35W or even 4W, depending on the
card(s) are doing. A 200W reduction in power means about 5 hours/kwh,
which in my neck of the woods would be more than US$50/year
for each card on a system that is running an extra 5 hours/day.
(Maybe you want to make a $50 donation and think the extra
electrical load is worth it to society, but you should be aware
that it is not like changing a NO-OP LOOP to something useful.)
