Default Dell laptop audio in?

Is this also a line-level input, or does it demand a microphone?

Any idea what sort of resistance suffices to convert line level?

On another device I found 500k ohms in series did the trick, but
this is going to depend very much on the device.

Or is there a USB thingy that would do me better.

Trial and error is best, although most mike inputs are in the 2K area,
so 519K would probably be fine.

This is a generic answer: very few laptops have line-in; the audio
input, if there is only one, is almost always a microphone input.
