How smart are all-in-ones?

... There's a $150 jobber from Lexmark, does print-scan-copy-fax, and I believe enlarge-reduce on the copy, and there are some more expensive models from HP, and also from Epson, and I believe Brother. Can't comment on the fax part, but you might want to consider the HP PSC-2210 that has been on sale a lot lately. |

If you are printing a long document and the phone rings with an incoming fax, are the printers or the drivers smart enough to do something good? Being rather seriously involved with the operating firmware of the Lexmark X6170, the answer is YES. The unit has 16 Mbytes of memory, which will hold a good number of normal monochrome fax pages. If the printer is occupied doing either PC print or local copy, the Fax data is stored in memory, and the fax print will begin as soon as the print engine is free. If the incoming Fax were color, you'd run out of memory sooner, but you still have enough to store several pages before memory runs out. If memory runs out while fax data is still arriving, the X6170 will terminate the call -- so at the very least, the sender knows that the fax failed and needs to be re-sent. At the receiving end (ie., the X6170) you will have the TSI and CID of the sender, even if this happens. Rest assured these scenarios were considered and tested G. rafe b. http://www.terrapinphoto.com |

x-no-archive: yes
just got the HP 2210 for $225 ..and I'm still amazed at all it can do ! ! ! so far so good. Prints, copies, faxes and scans.. all in one and FAST ! I'm using the USB port and a fast PC .. I'm an old hand at printers and so far, this is Outstanding. It's a little more than I had expected to pay ..but .. sure saves $$ not to go to Kinko's and use another FAX machine.. let us know what you decided ! |
