wrote: Does anyone know if there is a good USB flash drive checker that does more than Mac OS X's Disk Utility verifications and repairs? Maybe surface scans or something? There is no "surface" in a flash drive - it's basically RAM chips, same as an Solid State Drive (SSD). Any real problems would be normally be picked up and / or fixed when formatting the drive. Potentially, but unlikely, there could be a faulty / loose RAM chip. If it was intermittent, then it could pass the formatting tests and cause problems when copying large files. It could be a faulty / worn USB socket or plug. Or, if you have other USB devices plugged in, flash drive may not be getting enough power. Of course, the USB flash drive may be fine, and it's the other drive with issues. |

Hmm, or that Flash drive is the problem if multiple USB ports and other MacBook Pros. Maybe I should try doing the same with FAT32 and NTFS with Windows machines. -- Quote of the Week: Allah's Apostle said, "Once while a prophet amongst the prophets was taking a rest underneath a tree, an ant bit him. He, therefore, ordered that his luggage be taken away from underneath that tree and then ordered that the dwelling place of the ants should be set on fire. Allah sent him a revelation: 'Wouldn't it have been sufficient to burn a single ant (that bit you)?'" --Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Book 54, Number 536 Note: A fixed width font (Courier, Monospace, etc.) is required to see this signature correctly. /\___/\ Ant(Dude) @ http://antfarm.home.dhs.org (Personal Web Site) / /\ /\ \ Ant's Quality Foraged Links: http://aqfl.net | |o o| | \ _ / Please nuke ANT if replying by e-mail privately. Does anyone know if there is a good USB flash drive checker that does
more than Mac OS X's Disk Utility verifications and repairs? Maybe surface scans or something? flash drives don't have surfaces to scan So, memtest86 type to test? -- Quote of the Week: Allah's Apostle said, "Once while a prophet amongst the prophets was taking a rest underneath a tree, an ant bit him. One thing that was rumored to break SSDs are many small isolated writes, or flushing after every few bytes. To my knowledge Mac OS never did much flushing even if you asked it too (theres a video `Eat my Data'). Thus I doubt that's the problem. It might bite you if you unplug without unmounting. One thing I've observed on this (Linux)box, is a defective-by-design DVB stick bringing down the usb interfaces (all of them). I'd lose data on the attached usb Hdd. Another possibility might be a powersupply going bad, or transients from you utility company.(I heard they have less stringent requirements in the US) |

Can't remember the name and I had some trouble finding it, but it's on my Windows machine, so I'll try to post from there later. Often used for finding fake USB sticks, though the fake/dodgy stick I installed it for was so broken that it hung the program until it was unpluged, same with trying to access files. Linux was a bit less touchy about it. -- __ __ #_ |\| | _# |

USB Flash Drive Tester: http://www.vconsole.com/client/?page=page&id=13 I ran it on the problematic USB flash stick for about twelve/12 hours in a very old, updated Windows XP Pro SP3. No problems. It had to format and use its own file system(?). -- Quote of the Week: "It is said that the lonely eagle flies to the mountain peaks while the lowly ant crawls the ground, but cannot the soul of the ant soar as high as the eagle?" --unknown Note: A fixed width font (Courier, Monospace, etc.) is required to see this signature correctly. /\___/\ Ant(Dude) @ http://antfarm.home.dhs.org (Personal Web Site) / /\ /\ \ Ant's Quality Foraged Links: http://aqfl.net | |o o| | \ _ / Please nuke ANT if replying by e-mail privately.
